Enviromental Studies at Tamagawa JHS
The biggest lake
in
In the 1st
grade, we investigated living things around our school yard and made a map of
its ecology. We have held lectures by people from various positions and
standpoints, including: an active person within the neighborhood association, a
person in charge of pollution control at a factory, a person in charge of the
town environmental association, a professor at the university, and a foreign
scholar. We also attended some special lessons held by professors at
In the 2nd
grade, we divided the students into 4 fields (the neighborhood association, the
environmental administration, the University, and the Panasonic Corporation)
and 16 groups by the theme that each student wanted to study. One group planted
and grew bitter melons (goya) and
made some goya netting. Another group made original eco-bags and presented them to Ritsumeikan
students who filled out some questionnaires concerning the environment.
There were other groups who studied about Eco-cement, the purification
of factory sludge, and other environmental issues.
In the 3rd grade, we will produce reports concluding these environmental studies.
3rd year school trip
The 3rd year students go on a three-day trip to Miyagi at June.
They go to Tamagawa Junior High School in Shiogama city, to continue the connection each schools, and studies Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The students who are in two “Tamagawa JHS” sing the song together. They stay villages and experience the life style of Miyagi area. They have agricultural or Fishery experiences.
This trip is one of the biggest events for the students during their time at junior high school.
Field trip/Out-of-school study
Students take field trips to learn about a lot of different things.
As an example,the often learn the importance of societal rules and laws.
Anti-bullying Assembly
The school holds assemblies/meetings to raise awareness and prevent bullying.
During these meetings all of the students discuss how to get rid of and
prevent bullying in school. For example, they make posters and slogans
about being kind to one another and post them around the school.
Sports Festival
Each class in each grade competes against one another on Sports Day.
Chorus Contest
Classes competes against one another in the annual chorus contest.
Each class sings two songs every year. One is always the school song and the other one is chosen by the class.
Club Competitions
Students have competitions in each club.
They are held in spring, summer, and autumn.
Educational Counseling
Students can consult teachers on things regarding their studies/school life.
Parent Teacher Meetings
Students sit together with their parents and homeroom teacher to discuss and look back on their school life.
Cultural Exchange
The school invites students from abroadt to visit.
They teach the students about their own culture and in turn the students teach the visitors about Japanese culture.
Nengajo Contest
Japanese people send nengajo(New Year's cards) to friends and family every year. A nengajo contest is held at school every year as well. The best nengajo
is chosen from all of students' entries.
Karuta Competition
Karuta is a traditional Japanese card game.
The students hold a karuta competition at school every year.
Students are split into 5 groups and each group competes against one another.
At this competition the game of karuta is called hyakunin-isshu ,or“One
poem by One hundred people.“ It is a game that has been enjoyed by the
Japanese for centuries.
Graduation Ceremony
Each graduating student is presented with a junior high school diploma in front of the entire school.
The 1st and 2nd year students honor the graduating class by giving speeches and singing songs for them.The 3rd year students’parents also come to see this important event.
